TAKE MY MOTHER-IN-LAW…PLEASE!

TAKE MY MOTHER-IN-LAW…PLEASE! Mothers-In-Law are no laughing matter. Not only is she your spouse’s mother, she is your children’s grandmother! She is the reason that your spouse is who he is; why he treats you the way he does; why he has the values he has. She is who he compares you to. Yes, it is true. Your spouse will, and does, compare you to his mother in one way or another. You ....

CURMUDGEON

CURMUDGEON Webster defines curmudgeon as “a bad-tempered, difficult, cantankerous person.” Think about that a second…when the word cantankerous is part of the definition of another word, it becomes exponentially worse, don’t you think? When you picture what a curmudgeon looks like, you may think of a grumpy old man with a perpetual scowl on his face that has an opinion, a BAD opinion, ....

FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS: IT’S ALL RELATIVE

FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS: IT’S ALL RELATIVE “Blood is thicker than water.” This German proverb dates all the way back to the 12th century and is commonly accepted to mean that family relationships are stronger, or more important than other types of relationships, like friendships. So, if your cousin is getting married on the same day that your friends have invited you to go to the lake, yo ....

FRIENDS AND FISH

FRIENDS AND FISH It is said that we can count our true friends on one hand. So it makes sense that if you lose one of those friends it can feel like you’ve lost an appendage. You may also go through the same steps of grieving that are experienced by those that lose a limb; still feel that phantom limb. There are many ways that we lose friends; relocation, reorganization of life, job change ....

The Disturbing Effects of Technology on Your Relationships

Technology in our lives is exponentially growing in the amount of time we use it and what parts of our lives are helped by it. Technology has made our lives easier, helped us be more effective in our work and allowed us to connect with friends, family and colleagues across the world. However, often with rapid change, there is a cost. And far too often, relationships are suffering because of the ef ....

The first time Joe met my

The first time Joe met my parents could have very easily been the last. My father once heard a story about a father who greeted all of his daughter’s boyfriends with a shotgun in one hand. I’m pretty sure that my Father enjoyed the very clear unspoken message. Thus, when Joe came to pick me up for a date, my father was ready. My Dad brought out his two or three favorite guns. Dad sat down at a table off to the side, but in clear view of the entry way. He leaned two of the guns against the side of the table and had one carefully lain out on the table so he could clean it. I was busy getting ready for our date and had no idea my father had set up this little surprise for Joe. I was running a bit late so Joe had to wait about 10 minutes for me to come out. When I walked into the entry way I saw Joe casually chatting with my father about how a gun works. I thought “Oh no, I probably am not going to be going out with this guy again.” I still admire the cool head and courage it took for Joe to talk to my Dad about guns while waiting for me to be ready. I admire even more the courage it took for him to ask me out again.

Our 10th Anniversary

Every year on our anniversary, we try to do something new. Our tenth was no exception and was full of surprise for her. I told her that we were going to her favorite restaurant and I had made reservations. She thought it maybe a dinner and movie thing. Imagine her surprise when a stretch limo showed up at our door, and took us to Tiffany's where I asked her to buy whatever she liked. (Could have b ....

Falling in Love Again.

Recently I found myself taking my 4-year-old son to the ER in the small hours of the morning because he was having trouble breathing. I spent 4 hours in the ER while the doctors discovered that our son had croup. Because Joe knew that I had more stress than I deal well with, he called and got me in for a massage the following day. I woke up to the wonderful smell of fresh baked cinnamon rolls, af ....

GOOD TIMES

GOOD TIMES I think we could all agree that many people are going through some pretty tough times right now. Maybe the toughest times that we’ve seen. Some of us may remember the oil crisis in the 70’s and the dot com crash in the 90s. Some of us lost a LOT of money from our 401ks didn’t we. Some even had to come out of retirement and go back to work to make ends meet. Now we are hit ....
